Montclair State vs. Susquehanna

The Game Story:
Montclair, NJ (4/14/07) Ė Senior Evan Wehmeyer (Succasunna, NJ/Pope John XXIII) scored twice and added two assists while Bryan Klimchak (Clark, NJ/AL Johnson) recorded two goals and an assist as Montclair State posted its seventh straight victory with a 12-6 triumph over Susquehanna University in NCAA Division III menís lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ/Mountain Lakes) and John Della Pesca (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each collected two goals as the Red Hawks extended their longest winning streak since 1994 while also upping their record to 8-3 this season.

Freshman John Pillion ( Collegeville , PA /Conestoga) had a goal and two assists for Susquehanna, which fell to 2-9 in falling to MSU for the fourth time in as many meetings.

Montclair State led 7-2 at halftime and seemed to increase the lead early in the second half, however the Red Hawks were flagged for an illegal stick penalty and the Crusaders quickly seized the momentum with a four-goal run to pull within 7-6. Tom Thayer (Belle Meade, NJ/Immaculata) quickly scored on the man-advantage and Ryan Walters (Easton, PA/Easton) followed with 9:22 left to make the score 7-4. Pillion would tally just under two minutes later and then assisted on Shane Enosí ( Flemington , NJ /Hunterdon Central) goal with 3:47 left as the Crusaders trimmed the deficit to a goal heading into the fourth quarter.

Susquehanna carried a man-advantage opportunity into the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders could not get any closer as MSU goalkeeper Thomas Bowers ( Hamburg , NJ /Pope John XXIII) made four saves through the first half of the period. The Red Hawks then created some breathing room as Bachman scored with 6:20 left off a rebound to make the score 8-6. Wehmeyer would tack on his second with 4:34 to give MSU a three-goal lead and Mario Passafiume ( Boonton , NJ / Mountain Lakes ) scored 28 seconds later as Montclair widened its lead to 10-6. Wehmeyer would set up the final two goals by Della Pesca and Klimchak.

Bowers finished with 16 saves for Montclair State while Andrew Rosado ( Elmwood Park , NJ / St. Joseph ís (Montvale)) stopped two inside the final two minutes. Susquehanna netminder A.J. Schaufler ( Bernardsville , NJ /Bernards) was equally solid with 14 saves.

Montclair State held a 49-32 shot advantage for the game while also winning 12-of-21 faces, including 6-of-7 by John Schiavone ( Montclair , NJ / Montclair ) , who also had six ground balls. Wehmeyer had five face off wins and five ground balls. Bill Francy ( New Hope , PA / New Hope Solebury) had seven face off wins and three ground balls.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, April 18 as the Red Hawks travel to Kings Point , NY to face the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:00 pm. Susquehanna returns to New Jersey for its next contest as the Crusaders visit Drew University on Saturday, April 21 at 3:30 pm .
