|The Game Story:|
|Montclair, NJ (4/18/09) Freshman attack Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) scored the first and the last goal of the second half for Montclair State, the latter coming with 5:34 remaining in the game as the Red Hawks slipped past Muhlenberg College, 8-7 in an NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse contest at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.|
Meth, Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) and Matthew Prongay (Edison, NJ / Edison) each finished with two goals as MSU moved to 9-4 with its third straight win and second by the identical 8-7 margin.
Alex Ardolino (Florham Park, NJ / Hanover Park) and Corey Aferiat (Fairfax, NJ / Chantilly) each scored twice for Muhlenberg, which fell to 3-8 on the year as the Mules dropped their second straight one-goal contest and fourth this season.
Montclair State led 6-4 at halftime and the Red Hawks took advantage of penalty to start the third as Meth scored on the man-advantage 30 seconds in off an assist from Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex). But that would be the last goal the Red Hawks would get until the eventual game-winner as they were held to just seven shots over the next 24 minutes.
Meanwhile, Ardolino helped the Mules chip away at the lead scoring twice midway through the period to cut the deficit to 7-6. His first tally, an unassisted mark came with 10:11 left and he added another with 8:30 to go as Muhlenberg trailed by one heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, neither team could get many shots on net as only two were put toward the goal in the first 8:24 – both by Muhlenberg. MSU goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) stopped both of them however he would not stop the third as Brent Siebold (Mountain Lakes, NJ / Mountain Lakes) fed Ari Jacobson (Baltimore, MD / Beth Tfiloh) for the game-tying goal as the contest was knotted at 7-7 with 6:24 remaining.
It took Montclair just 50 seconds to get the lead back as John Schiavone (Montclair, NJ / Montclair) won the face off giving the Red Hawks possession. After swinging the ball around the cage, Schiavone would find Meth in front of the cage for the eventual game-winner.
Muhlenberg would get several chances over the final five minutes, but the Mules turned the ball over four times in the attack zone, including one on its last possession as they were called for offsides at midfield with six seconds left.
Muhlenberg dominated the first period outshooting Montclair 10-2 and led 2-0 as Aferiat and Siebold each scored. The Red Hawks would then start attacking the net and took the lead with three goals over a 1:15 span in the second. Schiavone, Prongay and Bonner each tallied before Sinicola’s goal with 8:49 to play made it 4-2. Aferiat and Bonner traded goals midway through the period but Andrew Lolley’s (Bel Air, MD / Loyola Blakefield) goal with 2:35 left trimmed the lead to 5- in favor of MSU.
Prongay got the final goal of the half as he connected off a Mario Passafiume (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) assist with 49 seconds left as Montclair held a two-goal lead at halftime.
Bowers finished with 11 saves for MSU, which was outshot in the game 29-21. Schiavone was 6-of-12 on faceoffs while Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Mike Horowitz (Randolph, NJ / Randolph) had five saves for Muhlenberg, which got nine faceoff wins and four ground balls from Dan Dugan (Branchburg, NJ / Immaculata).
Montclair State returns to action on Monday, April 20 as the Red Hawks host the College of Mount St. Vincent in a 7:00 pm Skyline Conference matchup at Sprague Field. Muhlenberg is on the road at Ursinus on Wednesday, April 22 at 4:00 pm.
