Mount Ida vs. Maine Maritime

The Game Story:
NEWTON, Mass. (April 7, 2007) – Sophomore attackman Brett Conley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) exploded for nine points on seven goals and a pair of assists to propel the Mount Ida College men’s lacrosse team to a 16-3 victory over the Maine Maritime Academy this morning in North Atlantic Conference action at the Mount Ida Athletic Stadium. With the win, the Mustangs extended their winning streak to 24 games versus league foes.

Mount Ida received solid production from junior attacker Andrew Cloonan (Franklin Mass./Franklin/Dean CC), who finished with five goals and a helper. Classmate John Lightbown (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic) dished out four assists, and senior Vince Pizzimenti (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) found the net twice.

Maine Maritime’s goals were scored by junior midfielder Nate Bolduc (Farmington, Maine), junior attackman Garrett Lake (Farmington, Maine) and sophomore defender Clay Tolman (Rockport, Maine).

The Mustangs scored the first four goals of the contest and led 10-1 at the break. Cloonan delivered all five of his markers before the intermission, and Conley added three. Mount Ida continued to dominate in the second half, leading by as many as 14 (15-1) early in the fourth period.

Mount Ida outshot the guests 40-17 and owned a 57-36 advantage in the ground ball column. The Mustangs controlled play due largely to winning 15 of the game’s 21 face-offs. They capitalized on their man-up opportunities, scoring seven times in 11 chances. Maine Maritime went 2-of-9 in its extra-man chances.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Bowler (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) stopped six shots for the hosts before giving way to freshman Matt Vernik (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional). The rookie made six saves in the fourth frame. Junior Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, Maine) turned away 12 shots between the pipes for the Mariners.

Mount Ida (5-3, 2-0 NAC) will return to action on Monday, when it visits Becker College for a North Atlantic Conference clash beginning at 3:30 p.m. Maine Maritime (2-4, 0-2 NAC) will travel to the University of Southern Maine for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
