Mount Ida vs. Maine Maritime

The Game Story:
On senior day, the Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team captured their sixth victory of the season in an 18-4 stomping against visiting North Atlantic Conference (NAC) foe Maine Maritime Academy on a wet and wild Saturday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts. The Mustangs improve to 6-6 overall and notch their fourth NAC win of the season (4-1). The Mariners get knocked out of second place in the conference standings dropping to 5-2 on the year, 5-2 in NAC play.

The teams traded goals to start the contest with the Mustangs striking first on a freshman Zack Jacobson (Shoreview, MN/Moundsview) score from freshman Derek O'Reilly (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) making it 1-0. The visitors answered quickly on a freshman Brian Corain (Berwick, ME/St. Thomas Aquinas) goal knotting it at 1-1.

Mount Ida scored the next five consecutive goals to go ahead by 6-1 from the middle of the first quarter into the second. Sophomore Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) notched two of the five during the stretch including another from Jacobson and one a piece from O'Reilly and senior Christopher Prophete (Waltham, MA/Waltham).

The visitors answered with their second goal of the contest on a sophomore Christopher Keiley (Holliston, MA/Holliston) score from senior Peter Betti (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Tabor Academy) making it 6-2 Mustangs.

Starting at the 11:36 mark in the second quarter to the end of the third, Mount Ida reeled off 11 consecutive scores blowing open the game and taking the outright 17-3 lead heading into the final frame. Savage, Prophete, and senior captain Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) each tallied two a piece during the offensive barrage. Jacobson, sophomore's Nate Prince (West Gardiner, ME/Gardiner Area), Derek Broughton (Peabody, MA/Peabody), and senior's Alex Champagne (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich), and Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA/Peabody) all tallied one a piece during the stretch.

The Mariners finally answered with back-to-back goals in the beginning of the fourth quarter from senior Phillip McNerney (Eliot, ME/Marshwood) and freshman Ryan Williams (Cumberland, ME/Greely) making it 17-4 hosts. Mount Ida tallied the final goal of the contest off Savage's fifth of the game from Shidler closing out the contest winning 18-4.

Mount Ida was dominant while the visitors struggled to keep up failing to put points on the board. Savage led the charge for the Mustangs with five goals while teammates Prophete and Jacobson tallied three a piece, with Prophete notching one assist.

Senior Craig Heintzelman (Windham, NH/Salem) powered the middle circle for the day converting 15-22 faceoff's and four groundballs. Senior Anthony DiMarsico (Fairport, NY/Fairport) chipped in three assists while Shidler added four as well.

The Mustangs outshot the Mariners by a whopping 52 shots to 17 and also controlled the groundball game with 38-27. Freshman Justin Famiglietti (Peabody, MA/Peabody) was between the pipes for the first three quarters for the hosts denying seven shots. Junior goalie Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity Regional) saw the final quarter for Mount Ida stopping one shot. Freshman Daniel Redmond (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) was in net for the Mariners saving 14 shots.

The Mustangs will travel to Husson College this coming Wednesday for more North Atlantic action starting at 4:00 p.m.
