Mount Ida Mustangs run wild beating MMA 19-3

Castine, Maine Ė Matt Savage (Peabody, MA) and Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA) each scored four goals as the Mount Ida Mustangs ran away with a 19-3 victory over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a North Atlantic Conference menís lacrosse game played Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

Mt. Ida (5-0 NAC) had a 5-0 after the first quarter and a 14-1 lead at the half before scoring five more second half goals to secure the victory over MMA. The Mustangs scored the first six goals of the match before Phil McNerney (Eliot, ME) put MMA on the board. Mt. Ida scored the next ten goals of the match, which included three tallies from Leo Shidler. Shidler finished the day with the four goals and three assists. The Mariners hung tough in the second half scoring two goals and only giving up five. The Mustangs got goals from 12 different players and combined on the day for 32 points.

Garrett Lake (Farmington, ME) and Phil McNerney, each had one goal and one assist apiece on the afternoon while Chris Keiley (Holliston, MA) contributed a goal. Goalie Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, ME) stopped six shots in the loss and dropped to 4-5 on the season.

For Mount Ida (8-4), Leo Shidler finished with a game-high seven points. Matt Savage finished with four goals while Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT) finished with one goal and four assists for five points. Andrew Cloonan (Franklin, MA) played well in the win scoring twice and collecting two assists while Nate Prince (West Gardiner, ME) added one goal and two assists for Mt. Ida. Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT) came up with 8 saves in the victory for the Mustangs.

The Mariners' (4-5 and 2-3 NAC)) return to action Wednesday when they travel to Daniel Webster College at 3:30 9.m. Next up for the Mustangs will be an home match versus Eastern Connecticut State College on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
