Mount Ida vs. Umass-dartmouth
April 23, 2008
The Game Story:
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Mount Ida built an 8-5 lead and held off a late rally to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team, 8-7, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing, 8-5, the Corsairs scored consecutive man-up goals in the latter part of the fourth quarter. Freshman midfielder Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) took a pass from freshman attackman Tim Walsh and fired home a shot with 5:40 remaining, and junior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) scored with 2:16 left to cut the Mustangs' advantage to a single goal. UMass Dartmouth had a final chance and called time out with possession in the offensive zone and 27 seconds remaining, but was unable to get off a final shot before time expired. "We set up a play for our best offensive midfielder," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We set it up, but they countered it and made a good defensive play."

Sophomore midfielder Pat Kohout (Leeds, MA/Northampton HS) gave the Corsairs a 1-0 lead 3:50 into the game, but Mount Ida got a goal from freshman midfielder Dan Harrington (Westford, MA) and two more from junior attackman Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT) to take a 3-1 lead. Leary and sophomore attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) sandwiched goals around a score by the Mustangs' junior attackman Leo Shidler (Peabody, MA) to make it 4-3 after the first quarter. Senior defenseman Andrew Getto (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) tied the game at 4-4 with a goal at 10:37 of the second quarter, but Conley and freshman midfielder Paul Battipaglia (Clinton, CT) scored to restore Mount Ida's two-goal advantage at halftime.

Arsenault scored with 1:28 left in the third quarter, but senior midfielder John Lightbown scored just before time expired in the third quarter. Freshman attackman Matt Savage (Peabody, MA) scored with 10:05 to play to set the stage for the Corsairs' late comeback.

Leary and Arsenault each scored twice for UMass Dartmouth, while Conley had three goals for Mount Ida.

"We didn't play well in the first half, but we came back and played great defense in the third quarter and showed a lot of fight coming back in the fourth quarter," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "It was a good wake-up call for us going into the WestConn game and going into the playoffs."

The Mustangs out shot the Corsairs, 35-26. Senior goalkeeper Steve Chase (Boston, MA/Boston Latin HS) made 11 saves for UMass Dartmouth, as did sophomore goalie Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT) for Mount Ida.

The Corsairs dropped to 10-3 with the defeat, while the Mustangs improved to 11-5 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday afternoon, while the Mustangs will host a North Atlantic Conference playoff game Saturday.
