| ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 26, 2005) ~V Nazareth took an early 2 goal lead and never trailed, defeating Elmira 13-8 in men's lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon in both teams' regular season finale. With the win, Nazareth secures the fourth seed in this weekend's Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Tournament. Greg Kanellis (Cortland/Cortland, NY) scored three of his four goals and Ryan Hotaling (Onondaga/Syracuse, NY) scored three of his game-high five goals in the first half, as Nazareth appeared to be pulling away, with the score 804 with 3:44 to play in the second quarter. Elmira scored three goals in the final 1:58 of the first half to draw within one goal at halftime, 8-7. Nazareth answered with a run of its own in the second half, with Hotaling and Bryan Coon (Webster/Webster, NY) scoring twice in 5-0 Nazareth second half run lead to give the Golden Flyers a comfortable 13-7 margin with 3:59 to play. Despite outshooting the visiting Soaring Eagles (7-6, 3-4 E8) 51-21 for the game and 25-5 in the second half, Elmira stayed close behind goalie Kevin Welinsky's (Friends/Baltimore, MD) 17 saves. Ashton McLean (Melvern/Scarborough, ONT) scored 3 goals and had an assist for Elmira, who also got 3 goals from Sean Slater (Ashland/Ashland, VA). Hotaling added two assists to his five goals to pace Nazareth. Coon had 2 goals and 2 assists and Chris Balash (Auburn/Auburn, NY) added a goal and 2 assists. Nazareth concludes its regular season at 5-2 in Empire 8 play and 10-2 overall. The Golden Flyers will play top-seeded Ithaca in the opening round of the Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Tournament Friday, at Ithaca, at 4 p.m. |
