Nazareth vs. Ithaca

The Game Story:
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 25, 2003) -- Senior midfielder Dave Graham (pictured) scored off a pass from Brian Navarra with 1:40 left in the second overtime Friday to lift host Nazareth to a 13-12 victory over Ithaca in men's lacrosse.

The goal gave Nazareth its first and only lead of the game and clinched for the Golden Flyers the Empire 8 Conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Ithaca led by as many as five goals late in the third quarter before the Golden Flyers rallied to outscore the Bombers 6-2 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Junior attackman Brandon Brown tied the game at 12-12 on an extra-man goal with :18 left in regulation.

Ithaca's Dennis Juleff scored twice in the first quarter as the Bombers took a 4-2 lead. The Bombers scored three more times in the second quarter, but Nazareth answered with a pair of goals from Chris Balash to stay within 7-5 at halftime. Ithaca used a pair of goals by Matt Casey and one from Devin Burgoon to push its lead to 10-5 with 4:00 left in the third quarter.

Nazareth rallied by scoring six of the next seven goals to tie the score at 11-11. Juleff scored unassisted with 7:16 left to push Ithaca back in front, but Brown forced overtime with his fourth goal of the game off a pass from Balash.

Both teams had overtime opportunities, but the game remained tied until Navarra found Graham in front of the goal for the game-winner.

Brown finished with four goals and one assist. Balash had two goals and two assists and T.J. Rogers also scored twice. Senior Jim Quackenbush won 14 of 26 face-offs and scooped up 15 ground balls.

Juleff had three goals for Ithaca (10-3 overall, 5-1 E8). Casey, Nick Mayer, and Scott Guerra each had two goals. Senior goalie Ryan Martin made 16 saves for Ithaca. Sophomore Don Green made 11 saves for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth (10-3 overall, 6-0 E8) completes its regular-season schedule Wednesday with an E8 Conference game against Elmira at 4 p.m. NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced May 4.
