| Sixteenth ranked Rensselaer rallied from an 8-6 deficit with 8 minutes to play in regulation to defeat #7 Nazareth 9-8 in overtime in men's lacrosse in Orlando, Florida.
Rensselaer jumped out to a early 2-0 lead with two goals in the first 5:06 of the first quarter by Luke Ruglis. Nazareth drew even on a goal one minute later by Denny Patrick off an assist from Brian Navarra and a second quarter goal by Justin Wahl (pictured). Ryan Balzer scored four minutes before halftime to put Rensselaer up 3-2, but goals by Brandon Brown and Wahl in the final minute of the half put Nazareth up 4-3. Long Stick-Midfielder Matt Kent scored Nazareth's final goal with 8:26 remaing in the fourth quarter to put the Golden Flyers up 8-6. Ruglis added his fourth goal for RPI at 4:35 and Adam Logiudice scored off an assist from Ryan Frisch with 2:28 remaining to send the game into overtime. Frisch would score the game winner 2:19 into the sudden death overtime period. Nazareth outshot Rensselaer 39-38, but only won 3 of 20 face-offs, and lost the battle for groundballs, 42-47. Wahl led the Golden Flyers with four goals. Navarra and David Graham each had 2 assists and Don Green made 12 saves in goal. Nazareth falls to 1-1 on the season and next plays on Wednesday at Empire 8 and East Avenue rival St. John Fisher at 4 p.m. |
