| New England Collegeís Matt Carey (Medford, N.Y.) scored five goals leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Plymouth State University Panthers 10-1 Thursday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrims snap a two game losing streak improving to 6-6 overall. The loss drops the visiting Panthers to 4-6 on the season.|
The two teams would battle evenly through the opening minutes before Carey would get the Pilgrims on the board scoring two goals within 25 seconds of each other to put NEC up 2-0. Plymouth would get on the board late in the opening quarter as Andrew Hettinger (Lagrangeille, N.Y.) would score his first goal of the season at the two minute mark cutting the NEC lead to 2-1. Carey would strike just seconds later netting his third goal of the game as the Pilgrims closed the opening quarter up 3-1.
NEC would continue to control much of the offense in the second quarter as they would outshoot Plymouth 11-6 and head into halftime up 6-1. The Pilgrims defense would come up huge in the second half of play as that Panthers would outshoot NEC 18-12 but keeper Nick Aquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.) would make 10 second half saves keeping Plymouth off the board. NEC would tack on three goals in the third quarter and a goal late in the fourth eventually cruising to the 10-1 victory.
NECís Jon Gabriel (W. Nyack, N.Y.) scored four goals for the Pilgrims and Clint McDonough (Mtn. Lakes, N.J.) dished out three assists. Picking up the win in goal for NEC was Aquaviva who finished with 13 saves. In goal for Plymouth was Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) who finished with 14 saves on the afternoon.
