| HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College men's lacrosse has advanced to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship for the second straight season beating the visiting Husson University Eagles 14-5 Wednesday afternoon in NAC Semifinal action.|
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 10-6 overall and will square off against the top-seeded Castleton State College Spartans in Saturday's NAC Championship in Castleton, Vermont. The loss ends the Eagles' season at 8-9 overall.
NEC would get on the board just under three minutes in the opening quarter as Matt Goyette (Lowell, Mass.) would put in a pass from Chris Collins (Murrieta, Calif.). The two teams would battle back and forth the remainder of the first before the Pilgrims would break the scoring drought with just two seconds remaining in the quarter as Brian Gillis (North Vancouver, B.C.) would score his 65th goal of the season assisted by Garrett Naimie (York, Maine).
The Pilgrims would get a quick second quarter goal by Goyette but Husson's leading scorer Mitch Heaps (York, Pa.) would get the Eagles on the board at the 12:32 mark cutting the lead to 3-1. The two teams would exchange goals before NEC's James Putney (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) would score two unassisted goals in a 20 second span putting the Pilgrims up 6-2. NEC's Adam Shute (Calgary, Alberta) would tack on a final first quarter goal with 1.8 seconds on the clock sending the Pilgrims into halftime up 7-2.
Husson would cut the lead to 7-4 in the third quarter as Heaps would come up with two goals, including a man-up goal assisted by Dustin Brett (Loudon, N.H.). The Pilgrims would get a goal back in the final minutes as Pat Miles (Brampton, Ontario) would put in a pass from Gillis at the 3:12 mark.
Husson would net the first goal of the fourth quarter thanks to a man-up goal by Alex Ryan (Northfield, N.H.) but NEC would respond closing out the game with six unanswered goals en route to the 14-5 victory.
NEC's Brian Gillis led all scorers with four goals and one assist. NEC's James Putney finished with three goals, while Adam Shute scored twice and had an assist.
Leading the way for Husson was Heaps who scored three of the five Eagle goals.
NEC finished the afternoon out shooting Husson 46-31 and held the 29-21 advantage in ground balls.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Cody Kitson (Shelton, Conn.) who finished the afternoon with 11 saves. In goal for Husson was John Hooper III (Wakefield, R.I.) who stopped 15 Pilgrim shots.
