New York Maritime vs. Oneonta State

The Game Story:
THROGGS NECK, NY - The SUNY Maritime men's lacrosse team improved to 6-1 after defeating the Red Dragons of Oneonta State by a narrow 14-12 margin. Oneonta fell to 2-3 on the season.

Maritime opened the scoring 4 minutes in with an unassisted goal by Steve Hackeling (Huntington, NY/Cold Spring Harbor). Oneonta answered back 4 minutes later with a goal of their own, the first of two for Pete Glass. The red Dragons took their first lead on Andy Hilton's first goal of the evening, but it was short lived. The Privateers answered back in less than 30 seconds with a man-up goal by senior captain Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside). The see-saw battle would prove to be the theme of the night. as Oneonta scored two more times in the first before Maritime added another with 3 seconds remaining.

The second quarter saw each team score twice, with Oneonta's Scott Weiner netting two goals, and Maritime's Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, NY/Lakeland) and Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) each scoring. The Privateers went into the locker room down 6-5, only the third time this season they trailed at the half.

The third quarter proved to be key to Maritime's victory, as the Privateers outscored Oneonta 6-2. Maritime scored the first 3 goals of the quarter, taking an 8-6 lead that they would never give up. A costly non-releasing penalty on the Red Dragons allowed Maritime to score twice within 20 seconds to open up the game. Donald Toby scored twice in the quarter, along with Lawrence Montreuil (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park).

Even though the Privateers were able to extend their lead to 12-8 in the opening minute of the fourth, Oneonta never gave up, and mounted an amazing comeback. A goal by Scott Weiner and Troy Lepore brought the score to 12-10. Montreuil added another goal, but Oneonta's Weiner and Hilton put together back-to-back goals within 20 seconds of each other, to pull the game to 13-12 with just over 4 minutes to play.

After a wide shot by Maritime, Oneonta had the ball behind their net with just over 45 seconds to play. The Red Dragons attempted to clear the ball, but Stephen Doherty got his stick in front of the pass, and sent the ball to the back of the net with 37 seconds to go.

In goal, Colin Gallagher (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) recorded his 5th win, making 17 saves. His counterpart Kyle Reich made 16 saves in the loss.

Montreuil led the Privateers with 4 goals and one assist. Doherty and Toby each had 3 goals, while Doherty added 3 assists, and Toby one. Fricke and Hackeling had two apiece. For the Red Dragons, Weiner recorded 4, while Hilton, Glass, and PJ Grasso had two each.

The Privateers will be on the road for their next game against Kings College this Saturday at 1:00PM.
