New York Maritime vs. Plattsburgh

The Game Story:
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 12, 2011) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost on Saturday afternoon to visiting Plattsburgh State University, 18-9, at Reinhart Field. The defeat drops Maritime's record to 0-4 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 1-1.

The Privateers were led by seniors Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) and Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), who each tallied two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) recorded 11 saves in three quarters of action and led Maritime with five groundballs. Classmate TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) had a team-high two caused turnovers as well as three groundballs. Senior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and freshman Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) each had four groundballs.

The score was close throughout, with the Privateers getting on the board first when junior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore). Then Maritime had to play a little catch-up, but after Hanratty scored his first goal of the game at 4:49 of the second quarter to pull within 7-5, Plattsburgh finished the half strong, scoring three times to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room for the break.

The momentum stayed with the Cardinals throughout the second half, as they outscored the Privateers 8-4, including scoring seven of eight goals at one point. Maritime got goals late from senior Andrew Marklin (Smithtwon, N.Y./Smithtown East) and sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), but it was not enough as Plattsburgh went on for the victory.

Also scoring for the Privateers was sophomore Theo Greene (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy), his second of the season, and freshman Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall), the first of his career. Sophomore Patrick McLaughlin (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) and junior Dylan Walsh (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) both picked up assists in the losing effort.

Plattsburgh was led by redshirt-senior Kyle Norchi, who scored a game-high five goals, while freshman Tim Lawrence scored four goals and tallied three assists to lead all players with seven points. In goal, freshman Danny Caufield earned the victory with 10 saves in the three quarters.

Maritime returns to action on Wednesday night, March 16, when the Privateers play host to arch-rival from across the Long Island Sound, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
