New York Maritime vs. Mount Saint Vincent
April 17, 2010
The Game Story:
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 17, 2010) – Senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y.) each netted four goals apiece to help lead the Maritime men’s lacrosse team over Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Vincent, 12-7, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers’ record to 5-7 overall on the season (3-1 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to an even 7-7 overall (1-3 Skyline).

Also with the victory, Maritime clinches a berth in the 2010 Skyline Conference Championship, as the squad can finish no lower than fourth in the final conference standings due to owning tiebreakers over the bottom three teams because of its victories over them.

Sophomore John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice for the Privateers, while sophomore Thomas Mullady (Centerport, N.Y.) and freshman Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) each scored one goal apiece. Messina also added one assist. Driscoll and Mullady were the squads’ leaders in ground balls with six and five, respectively. Junior Jesse de'Boer (Ridge, N.J.) picked up three assists in the victory and junior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Anthony Mendez (Staten Island, N.Y.) each contributed with an assist apiece. Driscoll and Mullady were the squads’ leaders in ground balls with six and five, respectively.

In net, senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn.) played 57-plus minutes and made eight saves to pick up the victory. Gallagher gave way to fellow classmate Kevin May (Hicksville, N.Y.), who shutout the Dolphins over the last 2:45 while making three key saves. Both goalies, as well as Doherty and Michael Bonanza (Clinton Corners, N.Y.), were playing in their last game at Reinhart Field. Larry Montreuil (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), who has missed the entire season due to a knee injury, and volunteer assistant James Shubel were also recognized for their contributions to the program in the past four years in a pre-game ceremony.

The Privateers struck first in the opening period, when Ryan Korb scored unassisted. Driscoll and Doherty added two more first-quarter tallies to extend the lead to 3-0. Messina found the back of the net with the first goal of the second quarter, but Mount Saint Vincent stormed back to tie the game at 4-4, before Korb scored his second off an assist from Messina to put Maritime up, 5-4, going into halftime.

The Dolphins scored first in the third quarter to the tie game at 5-5, but Maritime would tally the next three goals and never look back.

The Maritime men’s lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, April 21, when the squad travels to take on Montclair State (currently 9-3, 2-0 Skyline). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Red Hawks’ Sprague Field.
