New York Maritime vs. Western Connecticut

The Game Story:
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 3, 2010) – The Maritime men’s lacrosse team came from behind with three goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Western Connecticut State, 11-10, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. With the win, the Privateers improve to an even 1-1, while the Colonials drop to 0-1 in their first action of the season.

Senior Stephen Doherty led the way for Maritime with three goals and two assists for five points. Junior Seth Collins also recorded a hat trick on the game, while class mate Alexander Korb added two goals for the Privateers. The game-winning goal came from the stick of junior Jesse de Boer with 3:27 remaining in the final quarter.

Maritime entered the fourth trailing 9-8, and had to fight off a one-minute penalty to start it. Western Conn. State scored at 12:57 to increase its lead to 10-8, but Collins scored the first of three straight for Maritime less than three minutes later. Doherty tied the score with 3:57 to play and de Boer added the go-ahead tally just 30 seconds later.

The Privateers played catch-up most of the game, as the Colonials scored the first two goals late in the opening quarter. Korb, Doherty and senior Steve Hackeling scored in the first five minutes of the second quarter to give Maritime a 3-2 lead. WCS responded with three goals of their own to pull ahead 5-3 before the half.

Collins scored the first two goals of the second half to bring the score to 5-5 and then Korb put the Privateers ahead for the second time with 8:39 to play in the third. Again Western Connecticut responded with three goals to take an 8-6 lead. Junior Michael Hanratty and Doherty each scored to tie the game at 8-8 – Doherty’s goal was with nine seconds remaining in the quarter. On the ensuing faceoff, the Colonials’ Eric Small won the draw and barreled into the Privateer end and found the back of the net with just two seconds remaining.

Junior Ryan Korb had an assist for the Privateers, while Hanratty registered two assists in the game.

For Western Connecticut, senior Adam Lanehart and sophomore Sean Macey each recorded two goals and Macey led the team with four points (2g, 2a). Andrew Barbieri, Kirk Zachery, Ryan Gills, Mike Schoen and Small added the other goals for the Colonials, and Zachery and Schoen each registered an assist.

Maritime returns to the field on Sunday, March 7, when they play host to Oswego State at noon at Reinhart Field.
