|April 25- Nichols College scored six goals in eight minutes of play late in the game, but fell just shy as New England College edged the Bison, 14-12, on Wednesday night. With the heartbreaking loss, Nichols drops to 2-11 overall on the year with a 1-6 record during conference play. The Pilgrims of NEC improve to 4-8 overall on the season and 2-5 within the conference. Nichols junior Peter Smyth (Bradford, MA) led all players with seven points in the losing effort.|
New England College shared the wealth as nine Pilgrims scored. Freshman Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario) and sophomore Cory Love (Rochester, NY) led NEC with three goals apiece, as the Pilgrims jumped out to a 7-2 first half lead. The Bison charged back before halftime scoring two quick goals by sophomore Matt DiBona (Centerville, MA) as Nichols cut the lead to 7-4 at the half. DiBona finished the game second in points with four goals and two assists for six points.
NEC opened the third quarter with three straight scores, with Love tallying the first two. Nichols stampeded within a goal, 11-10, as they scored six goals in eight minutes with Smyth leading the charge with two goals and two assists during that streak alone. Nichols senior Tim Clark (Woburn, MA) capped the run with a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the final frame. The Pilgrims junior Dan Foster (Wiscasset, ME) scored the eventually game winning goal to top off his own four point game as he tallied a goal and three assists.
Nichols will look to wrap up its season on a good note when it hosts Commonwealth Coast Conference foe, Curry College, on Saturday, April 28th. The opening faceoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
