April 4, 2009
The Game Story:
Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College had a two goal lead with just over four minutes to play, but the Medaille Mavericks scored twice to tie the game at 12 and Even Bennett found the back of cage in the second overtime to steal a 13-12 win away from the Yeomen.

The Yeomen got three goals from Alex Chapman and two scores from Jesse Kane, Dylan Holmes, Kif Leswig and Alex Jacobs. Kane, also won 13-of-18 face offs and scooped up a game-high 10 groundballs.

“This is a disappointing loss for us as we gave this one away today,” head coach Kevin Walz said. “Our guys played hard and the effort was definitely there, we just need to make smarter decisions.”

Oberlin (1-5) was trailing 8-6 in the closing moments of the third period, but scored twice in a seven-second span to tie the game at going into regulation.

Back-to-back goals by Bond and Jacobs gave the Yeomen their two-goal advantage, but Bennett tallied his third of four scores on the day at the 2:52 mark and Ellis Jordan added the equalizer with 1:15 left on the fourth-quarter clock. OC had one last chance as Leswig had a look at the cage just before the horn but his shot sailed wide to force the extra sessions.

In relief of starter Glen Gerbush, rookie goalie Jon Weisburst made eight says and recorded five groundballs.

The Mavericks slightly out-shot the Yeomen 50-57, but OC dominated the groundball battle 50-38 and won 18-of-30 face offs.

Medaille was a perfect 4-of-4 on man-up opportunities, while Oberlin finished 2-of-4.

The Yeomen will look to bounce back when Denison comes to town on Wednesday night for a 6:30 p.m. showdown.
