| The Game Story: | |||||
| Freshman attacker Steve Hill (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) scored twice and
junior attacker Mark Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) had a goal and an assist
as Cabrini jumped to a 6-1 lead and held off an Ohio Wesleyan rally to
escape with a non-conference win on Saturday at Dublin Scioto High School.
Hill staked the Cavaliers to a 1-0 lead with a man-up goal in the first quarter, but the Bishops answered with a goal by junior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) less than 2 minutes later. Cabrini then went on a 5-0 run, with Hill scoring to kick off the spurt and adding an assist later on. Freshman attacker Jeff Scott (Emmaus, Conn.) scored to finish off the Cavalier run, giving Cabrini a 6-1 lead with 3:34 left in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 6-4 at halftime, getting goals by Schlegel, junior midfielder Brian Small (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman midfielder Jon Lewis (Columbus/Upper Arlington). The Bishops got another goal by Lewis in the first minute of the third quarter to pull within 6-5. Sophomore attacker Matt Campbell (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) then set up senior attacker Michael Piccoli (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and added an unassisted goal to pad the Cavalier lead to 8-5. The Bishops countered with scores by Lewis and junior attacker Jason Balmer (Chester Springs, Pa./Forman School) to slice the margin to 8-7, and Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes, getting a man-up opportunity with 1:02 remaining, but Schlegel's shot just before the final horn was wide. Lewis led the Bishops with 3 goals, while Schlegel finished with 2 goals and 2 assists. Hill and Campbell each had 2 goals and an assist for Cabrini. Junior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) had 12 saves for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior Antonio Masone (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had 11 saves for Cabrini. |
