The Game Story:
Junior attacker John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) scored a goal during each of a pair of 3-0 runs and Ohio Wesleyan held off a frantic Big Red comeback to defeat Denison in non-conference play on Saturday.

Schlegel had a goal and 2 assists during a 3-0 second quarter run that turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 Ohio Wesleyan lead. He scored the third goal during the run, a man-down unassisted score with 3:10 left in the first half.

Denison had closed to within 6-5 early in the third quarter when Schlegel scored to kick off the second 3-0 run. With a delayed offside penalty looming, the Big Red had 7 players on defense when Schlegel circled the goal and scored an unassisted goal. Freshman attacker Grover Light (Boca Raton, Fla./Pope John Paul II) and freshman midfielder Chad Pouliot (Ridgewood, N.J.) added goals to give the Bishops a 9-5 lead with 1:00 left in the third quarter.

Denison got a goal from sophomore midfielder Dean Scontras (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in the closing seconds of the third quarter, but the Bishops got that goal back when junior attacker Jason Balmer (Chester Springs, Pa./Forman School (Conn.)) scored to make it 10-6 with 12:06 left in the game.

The Big Red closed to within 10-7 on a goal by by junior midfielder Jordan Kilbury (Dublin/Wellington) with 7:03 left and made it 10-8 on Pastor's man-up goal with :50 remaining. Ohio Wesleyan won the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over in the Denison end, and the Big Red got a goal from sophomore midfielder Yianni Savoulidis (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) to close within 10-9 with :23 remaining.

Denison won the next face-off but turned the ball over in the Ohio Wesleyan end. The Bishops came up with the ball, but the clearing pass was intercepted and Kilbury's 30-yard shot was wide of the crease just before the final horn.

Schlegel led the Bishops with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Light added 2 goals

Pastor led Denison with 4 goals and an assist, and sophomore attacker Ted Douglass (Englewood, Colo./Kent Denver) added 2 goals. Junior Paul McCommons (Smyrna, Del./Dover) had 10 saves for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior Tom Moriarty (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) had 10 saves for Denison. The win gave Ohio Wesleyan a sweep of the season series between the teams. It was the first sweep by either team since 1998, when Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison by scores of 8-7 in Granville and 11-8 at Selby Field.
