Ohio Wesleyan vs. Oberlin
April 1, 2009
The Game Story:
Senior attacker Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) and senior attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice) scored 3 goals apiece as Ohio Wesleyan tied a school record by scoring 12 goals in the first quarter and went on to defeat Oberlin in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday at Selby Field.

Junior midfielder Chris Ehlinger (Radnor, Pa.) put the Bishops on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game before Zimmerman found junior attacker Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) twice and Young fed Gallagher for a score, all within a span of 59 seconds, as the Bishops raced to a 4-0 lead.

Zimmerman, junior midfielder Chaz Narwicz (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep), and Gallagher added scores as the Bishops extended the margin to 7-0 midway through the first quarter, and Zimmerman followed with a man-down score before junior attacker Gavin Cunningham (Rye, N.Y.) scored a man-up goal for a 9-0 advantage.

Sophomore defenseman Scott Chester (Medina) scored in transition to make it 10-0 with 1:48 left in the quarter, and a man-up score by Gallagher and another Zimmerman goal gave the Bishops a 12-0 lead.

The Bishops' 12 first-quarter goals tied the school record accomplished twice previously, against Mount Union on April 22, 1985, and against Wittenberg on April 9, 1996.

Junior attacker Dave Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) and sophomore attacker Shaun Crow (Darnestown, Md./The Bullis School) scored 3 goals apiece during the second quarter, which ended with Ohio Wesleyan leading, 19-0.

Dylan Holmes got Oberlin on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter, scoring off a feed from Nick Thypin-Bermeo, and the Yeomen added a pair of scores courtesy of the connection from Jesse Kane to Alex Jacobs, to make it a 20-3 game after 3 periods.

Senior midfielder Kyle Adams (North Canton/Hoover) scored his first collegiate goal and freshman attacker A.J. Pellis (Edmonton, Alberta/St. Francis Xavier) compiled a goal and 2 assists to highlight the fourth-quarter action.

Zimmerman finished with 3 goals and 3 assists, while Crow had 4 goals and an assist. Gallagher and Castignola each had 3 goals and an assist for Ohio Wesleyan.
