|Men's Lacrosse Starts Fast But Falls to No. 11 Ohio Wesleyan, 14-7|
BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior attack Brian Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) had four goals and two assists, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team dropped a 14-7 decision to 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in a game played at Loyola College.
Stevens (2-2) has suffered losses to two nationally ranked teams. The Ducks were beaten by 17th-ranked Lynchburg, 10-9, in quadruple overtime on Sunday. Ohio Wesleyan improves to 2-1. The Bishops’ only loss came against second-ranked Salisbury.
Stevens started strong against Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman attack Rich Benson (Nassau, Del./Cape Henlopen), Lalli and junior attack Matt Kuppe (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) scored first-quarter goals to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead. Lalli’s goal with 10:26 left in the second quarter put Stevens ahead 4-3. The Bishops received goals from sophomore John Schlegel and senior Frank Bedford to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
Ohio Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the third quarter before Lalli answered with a pair of unassisted goals for Stevens to pull the Ducks within 9-6 entering the final period. The Bishops then exploded for five goals in the fourth quarter, all by senior Andy Rowe who finished with seven for the game. Benson’s goal, off an assist from Lalli with 5:22 left, was Stevens’ lone goal in the final period.
Ohio Wesleyan held a 36-35 advantage in shots. Sophomore Paul McCommons stopped 10 shots for the Bishops. Junior Matt Cannon (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made six saves for the Ducks.
Stevens returns to action next Wednesday, March 19, when it hosts Centenary College in a 7 p.m. game.
