Ohio Wesleyan vs. Wooster
April 9, 2008
The Game Story:
After falling behind 9-3 early in the third quarter, The College of Wooster pulled to within a three-goal margin twice during the fourth quarter, but could not get any closer, as Ohio Wesleyan University secured an 11-7 victory in a key North Coast Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday at Delaware, Ohio.

Mark Weschler netted a man-up goal just seconds into the fourth and Pat Coyne added a score just about a minute later to bring Wooster (6-2, 0-2 NCAC) within striking distance at 9-6 with 13:39 in regulation. Ohio Wesleyan (6-4, 2-0 NCAC) then ended what was actually a three-goal run, dating back to the third quarter, by the Fighting Scots to push the margin back to four.

Coyne scored at the 3:54 mark, giving Wooster hope again as that made it a 10-7 game. The Battling Bishops answered again, though, to seal the win.

Ohio Wesleyan never trailed, holding leads of 3-2 and 6-3 at the conclusion of the first two quarters. Chris Gatsch had given the Scots the momentum on a man-up goal with less than 2:00 remaining in the half, only to see the Battling Bishops take it away with a goal of their own before halftime.

The crucial part of the contest may have been Ohio Wesleyan’s three goals to start the third quarter, as that stretch gave it a six-goal cushion before Wooster made its charge.

For the Scots, Coyne, Gatsch, and Weschler each had two goals. Gatsch contributed two assists for a four-point game.

Leading the Bishops was Nick Gallagher with three goals and an assist.

Defensively, Wooster’s Matt Biester was credited with five saves and Ryan Perone tallied eight on the other side of the field.

The Scots will be home this Saturday for a match-up with Colorado College (5-2) at noon.
