Oneonta State vs. Elmira
April 16, 2003
The Game Story:
Oneonta State used four goals in each the second and third quarters to defeat visiting Elmira 11-10 in nonconference men's lacrosse action this afternoon on a breezy All College Field for its fourth straight victory. With the victory, the Red Dragons improve to 8-6 overall while the Soaring Eagles drop to 2-7 on the season.

The hosts jumped on the board quick and early as junior James Battaglia (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) scored unassisted less than a minute into the contest. From there, Elmira took control of the first quarter with a 3-1 burst to close out the first period of play. Sophomore Scott Campbell (Markham, CAN/Markham) netted the equalizer at the 9:48 mark. Just over a minute later, senior Christopher Burt (Horseheads, NY/Williston-Northampton) scored his first of two goals on the afternoon to take a 2-1 lead in favor of the visitors. Senior Brian Balash (Auburn, NY/Auburn) netted his first of four goals at the 6:26 mark to pull the Red Dragons even once again. The tie would be short-lived, however, as the Soaring Eagles made it 3-2 less than a minute later when Burt scored.

In the second quarter, it was all-Oneonta as the Red Dragons netted four unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead into the intermission. Balash opened second quarter scoring when he took a crossing pass from sophomore Sean Sullivan (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) in front of the Elmira goal and slipped it passed the Eagle keeper. Back-to-back goals within 26 seconds of each other by juniors Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Matt Winchell (Syracuse, NY/Henngier) gave Oneonta the lead for good at 5-4 with 6:20 to play in the first half.

The Red Dragons weren't done, though. The hosts opned the second half with two straight goals to extend their lead to 8-4. A man-up goal by Elmira junior Alexander Karoly (Brewster, NY/Avon Old Farms) cut the lead to 8-5 with 5:39 to play in the third quarter. Coughlin answered with a man-up goal of his own off a Battaglia assist at the 2:49 mark to extend the lead back to four. Balash netted his fourth and final goal of the afternoon with 33 seconds left in the quarter.

Oneonta extended the lead to 11-5 with 8:54 remaining in the contest when junior Keith Adler (Seaford, NY/Seaford) scored his only goal of the afternoon, unassisted. Elmira closed with a 5-0 run but could not finish the comeback. During the closing stretch, Karoly netted two more goals to complete the hat trick and lead the offense for the Soaring Eagles with three goals. Sophomore Keith Holmes (Windsor, CT/Avon Old Farms) scored the final Elmira goal of the afternoon with 1:02 showing on the clock. Oneonta controlled the ensuing faceoff and ran the clock inside 12 seconds before a costly turnover allowed the visitors one last chance. Elmira took the ball the length of the field before Slotnick fired a shot on the cage, but Oneonta junior keeper Mike Louer (Islip, NY/Islip) made his 14th and final save of the afternoon as time expired.

The Red Dragons conclude the home portion of their schedule on Saturday when SUNYAC-foe Potsdam travels to All College Field for a Noon game.
