Oneonta State vs. Geneseo State
April 5, 2003
The Game Story:
The visiting Geneseo Blue Knights defeated host Oneonta State 13-7 in a key early season SUNYAC game this afternoon at All College Field. Geneseo pulled away in the third quarter to break open an otherwise tightly played game to raise its record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The loss for Oneonta drops them to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC while also snapping a mini two-game win streak.

The hosts got on the scoreboard first just 48 seconds into the opening half on a goal by senior Mark Weber (Islip, NY/Islip) with an assist from junior Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY/Shaker). Geneseo came right back less than a minute later to even the score on a goal by junior Mark Engel (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) with an assist from classmate Dave Spennachio (Fairport, NY/Fairport). The Red Dragons opened up a two-goal lead with a pair of goals within eight seconds of each other just under the 10-minute mark. Junior Arie Claflin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), who finished the day as the top point scorer for Oneonta with five points, scored a man-up goal at 9:53 and was followed by senior Brian Balash (Auburn, NY/Auburn) at 9:45. The Blue Knights then scored three straight goals, including two by freshman Jake Ryerson (Rochester, NY/Brighton) to take their first lead of the day at 4-3. A goal by junior James Battaglia (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) with eight seconds remaining in the first quarter brought Oneonta back to even at 4-4 entering the second quarter.

Geneseo outscored Oneonta 2-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-5 halftime lead. After the Red Dragons scored the first goal of the quarter, the Blue Knights scored the final two including their first man-up goal of the game for the advantage at the break.

The Blue Knights came out of halftime and took control of the game with a five-goal quarter while only allowing one goal for an 11-6 lead. Two consecutive goals by sophomore Chris Kelley (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) in the first 2-1/2 minutes of the quarter and a man-up goal by classmate Chris Stock (Rochester, NY/Penfield) fueled the attack for the visitors.

Oneonta did score the first goal of the fourth quarter at the 13:54 mark to cut the lead to 11-7, but were unable to penetrate the Blue Knight defense the rest of the way. The final goal of the game for Geneseo came at the 1:10 mark by junior Tim Killoran (Syracuse, NY/Henniger) for the final margin of victory.

The Red Dragons will be in action again this coming Wednesday when they host Elmira for a game that begins at 4:00 p.m.
