| Dan Geiger (New Canaan, CT/Lawrenceville) scored with 5:58 to go
in fourth quarter and then Hamilton held off a late rally by Oneonta
State in the final 20 seconds to steal an 8-7 victory over the Red
Dragons in non-conference men's lacrosse action this evening. Geiger,
who scored a game high three goals, also tied the game 7-7 just 41
seconds earlier giving them the lead for good. The loss for the Red
Dragons drops their record to 3-4 overall while the Continentals raise
their record to 3-3.
Hamilton controlled played in the first quarter by out shooting Oneonta 11-2, and took a 2-0 lead after one on goals by Kevin St. John (Essex Falls, NJ/West Essex Regional) and Scott Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan).
The Continentals took a 3-0 early in the second quarter on a goal by sophomore Jack Newton (Darien, CT/ Darien) before the Red Dragons rallied for four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 halftime lead. Senior, Arie Clafin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) put the Red Dragons on the board with an unassisted goal at the 8:16 mark. Clafin struck again at 4:16 with an assist from classmate Dan Bakke(Floral Park/Floral Park). Bakke then scored the first of his two goals wtih 1:47 remaining in the half to tie the game before senior Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY/Shaker) score the go-ahead goal with 50 seconds remaining.
The two teams exchaged a pair of goals in the third quarter, Oneonta maintained its one goal lead entering the fourth quarter. Junior George Earle (Rosemont, PA/The Haverford School) notched the first goal of the final quarter tying the game at 6-6. Just over one minute later Oneonta scored what would be their final goal of the evening when Bakke scored an unassited goal. The game ended with Oneonta having three scoring opportunites in the final 20 seconds but was unable to convert.
The Red Dragons will be back in action at home this Saturday when the host St. John Fisher at 3:00 p.m.
