Oneonta State vs. Hartwick

The Game Story:
Senior attackman Ethan Poole (Geneva, NY/Geneva) worked his way to the front of the goal against two Oneonta State defenders and scored an unassisted goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game to give Hartwick College a 13-12 victory this afternoon in men^s Div. III top 20 lacrosse action. Hartwick, who entered the game as the #10 ranked team in Div. III, is now 4-0 while Oneonta State, who is #19 in the country, drops to 4-1.

The game was played as billed as two top 20 teams went at each other for the full 60 minutes. Both goalkeepers came up with some big stops especially Oneonta^s Mike Louer (Islip, NY/Islip) who faced 50 shots and came up with 20 saves.

The Hawks got things going early with the game^s first goal seven seconds into the contest. Off the faceoff, senior Bill Luzzi (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) picked up the ground ball and passed to classmate Ross Pino (Rochester, NY/Webster) who fired the ball by Louer. Hartwick then added two more goals by senior Ryan Hoffmeister (Norfolk, MA/St. Sebastian^s) and Poole to take a 3-0 lead with less than five minutes to go in the opening quarter. During the final 4:19 of the period Oneonta outscored the Hawks 3-2 to trail at the end 5-3. Junior Vin Schettino (Holbrook, NY/Sachem) tallied twice to lead the late charge for the Red Dragons.

In the second period the action remained intense with the score remaining close. After a goal by junior Brian Balash (Auburn, NY/Auburn) to start the quarter for Oneonta, the Hawks came right back eight seconds later to take their two goal lead back. Two straight goals by Oneonta senior Matt Puerta (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) to tie the score was followed by two straight by the Hawks. Hoffmeister and Poole tallied again for Hartwick to give them their two goal cushion for the third time in the game. The Red Dragons closed the second period with three straight goals including two by senior Mike Massari (Shoreham, NY/Centereach) to take a 9-8 lead into halftime. The third period only saw four goals total, two by each team, as Oneonta maintained their one goal lead at 11-10 enetring the fourth quarter. Hoffmeister had a man up goal to tie the game followed by the fourth goal of the game by Poole to give Hartwick a 10-9 lead. Puerta and Balash would tally one each to give Oneonta the lead back before the end of the quarter.

The first goal of the final quarter came on a man up for Hartwick as junior Ryan Maloney (Downington, PA/Downington) took a pass from Poole and put it by Louer to tie the game at 11-11 with 3:47 remaining. The Hawks took the lead less than a minute later when Pino intercepted a pass in front of the Oneonta goal and put the ball into an empty net for the 12-11 lead. The Red Dragons battled back to tie the game at 1:09 on a goal from senior Anthony Pisciotto (Port Jefferson, NY/Ward Melville) who fought his way around to goal to get his shot off.
