Oneonta State vs. Oswego State
April 22, 2006
The Game Story:
Oneonta State Sophomore defender Chris Duffy (Camillus, NY/West
Genesee)
scored just 14 seconds into the first overtime to lift the Red Dragons to a
dramatic 7-6 win against Oswego this afternoon in SUNYAC men's lacrosse
action. The win for Oneonta also secured them a berth in the SUNYAC
tournament that begins a week from Wednesday. Even if the Red Dragons
finish 3-3, they will own the head-to-head tie breakers with anyone they
may
be tied with for the final spot in the tournament.
Oneonta (9-4/3-1) trailed 6-3 with less than 10 minutes to go in the
fourth quarter before tying the game at the 1:04 mark. The Red Dragons
also
had the final opportunity in regulation, but had a shot by sophomore Tim
Burns (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) hit the left post and deflect out.
Oneonta jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes of
the opening quarter including a man-up goal by junior Neal Campbell
(Merrick, NY/Mepham). The opening goal of the game came unassisted by
Tyler
Dunne (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) at the 12:30 mark.
Oswego cut Oneonta's lead in half at 6:42 when senior Chris Mitchell
(Oswego, NY/Oswego) took a feed from Steve Tronovitch (Binghamton,
NY/Chenango Forks) and put a shot to the back of the goal. The first
period
came to an end with the score 2-1 in favor of Oneonta.
The second quarter was all Oswego as they scored three unanswered goals
including two by Tronovitch. Oswego's third goal of the period came with a
man-up and was registered by Mitchell with an assist from classmate Jeff
Salisbury (Oswego, NY/Oswego). The Lakers' defense held Oneonta scoreless
while out shooting the Red Dragons 13-5 as they took their 4-2 lead into
halftime.
The third quarter was relatively quiet with both teams scoring one goal
each. Campbell scored his second of the game for Oneonta while freshman
Tom
Maloney (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored for Oswego.
With its 5-3 lead heading into the fourth period, the Lakers extended
its lead to three goals at the 10:49 mark when Maloney notched his second
of
the game unassisted.
Less than one minute later junior Mike Schanz (Endwell, NY/Maine
Endwell) scored to cut the Lakers' lead to two goals at 6-4. At the 3:14
mark, freshman Mike Evans (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) scored with a man
down to pave the way for the tying goal by Campbell at 1:04.
Oneonta State goalie Brian Tricoles (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) and
Oswego goalie Matt Pfister (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) were both
solid
between the pipes today as both made 14 saves each in the game.
Oneonta will be back in action this Wednesday at Plattsburgh beginning
at 4:00 p.m.
