| The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team got four points each from
seniors Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Dan Bakke (Floral Park,
NY/Floral Park) this afternoon to help lead the Red Dragons to a 13-9
victory over SUNYAC rival Oswego. Oneonta has now won four of its last
five games to raise its overall record to 8-5 and 3-1 in the conference
while the Lakers fall to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the SUNYAC.
The visitors actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by
freshman Steve Tronovitch (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) and junior Adam
Phelps (Jordan, NY/Jordan-Elbridge). Oneonta answered with four straight
goals to end the quarter with a 4-2 lead.
Oneonta increased its lead to 5-2 on an unassisted goal by senior
James Battaglia (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) at the 12:34 mark of the
second quarter. The Lakers countered with back-to-back goals less than
one minute apart to cut the lead back to one goal at 5-4. Senior Arie
Claflin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and junior Chad Wagoner (Chittenango,
NY/Chittenango) scored consecutively in the final five minutes for
Oneonta, as they took a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Battaglia scored his second goal of the game early in the third
quarter for an 8-4 lead before the two team began to exchange goals
throughout the remainder of the game. The Lakers were as close as 11-8
with just under five minutes to go in the game, but Coughlin's third goal
put the game away for the Red Dragons. Senior Mike Louer (Islip,
NY/Islip) made a season high 22 saves in the win for Oneonta.
Oneonta will be on the road this Wednesday when they travel to
Plattsburgh for a SUNYAC game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
