May 1, 2002
The Game Story:
Senior Anthony Pisciotto (Port Jefferson, NY/Ward Melville) scored eight goals and added three assists as Oneonta State ran to a 17-3 halftime lead en route to a 22-12 victory over Oswego in SUNYAC tournament semifinal action this afternoon. The win for the Red Dragons now moves them into the championship game at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday at Cortland against the top-seeded Red Dragons who defeated Geneseo 13-0 in the other semifinal game today.

The opening quarter started out as a close affair with Oneonta holding a 4-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play. Pisciotto scored the first of his eight to open the scoring at 8:40 before Oswego tied it up a minute later on an unassisted goal by senior John Stafford (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta). The Red Dragons closed the quarter outscoring Oswego 3-1 for their early advantage.

The second quarter belonged to Oneonta who put together their best 15 minutes of the season. When it was all over, the Red Dragons scored 13 goals while only allowing one to take a 17-3 lead into the break. The closing run of goals in the quarter came in a bunch of nine straight including five in a span of 1:33 to put the game away. Pisciotto led the way in the quarter with five goals while classmate Matt Puerta (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) tallied three goals including an extra man goal. With his first goal, Puerta became the program^s all-time leader in goals scored breaking the record set by All-American Brian Dooley in 2000.

The visitors actually outscored the hosts 9-5 over the final two quarters of play for the final score of 22-12. Junior Brian Dautrich (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and sophomore Scott Ferguson (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) each scored two goals apiece in the half to lead the Lakers. Oneonta will take their 12-3 record to Cortland on Saturday to play for the SUNYAC championship and, with the trip, have an opportunity to earn the conference^s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
