Oneonta State vs. Potsdam State

The Game Story:
The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team has made things interesting lately and today they pulled out another one-goal victory, this time in the third overtime period to earn its fifth straight win. Today's tough luck opponent was Potsdam, who used a 6-2 fourth quarter to tie the game at 9-9 and force the extra periods. Senior Vincent Schettino (Holbrook, NY/Sachem) took a pass from classmate Brian Balash (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and whistled a ball by the Potsdam goalie with 2:08 left in the third overtime to end the game.

The Red Dragons are now 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC while Potsdam falls to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The win for the Red Dragons, which was its third straight by one goal, clinches a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament that begins on Wednesday, Apr. 30. Oneonta will finish either second or third in the conference depending on how they fare against Cortland next Saturday.

The Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the opening quarter on goals by juniors Keith Adler (Seaford, NY/Seaford) and Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY/Shaker. The Bears got on the board and cut the lead to one goal at the 4:34 mark on a goal by freshman Greg Stocks (Nanaimo, NY/Nanaimo) with an assist from senior Eric Lehman (Lowville, NY/Lowville). Oneonta added on more goal at 1:10 when Schettino scored his first of the day from junior Arie Claflin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran).

In the second quarter the hosts scored two goals including a shorthanded goal by goalie Mike Louer (Islip, NY/Islip), who took the ball the length of the field and beat the Potsdam goalie in the upper left corner. The Red Dragons took its 5-1 lead into the lockerroom.

The two teams each tallied two goal in the third quarter for a 7-3 advantage for Oneonta entering the fourth. Potsdam netted the first two goals of the quarter including a man-up goal by senior Eric Lemelbaum (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) who finished the game with a game-high five goals four of which came with the extra man.

The visitors totally dominated the fourth quarter to the point of actually taking the lead at 9-8 with 6:57 to go. Trailing 8-5 with 11:33 remaining the Bears struck for four straight including two with the extra man. The goal that gave the visitors the lead came from Lehman unassisted. Junior James Battaglia (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) notched an unassisted goal three minutes later to knot the game at 9-9.

In the extra sessions both teams had its share of opportunities with the goalies for both teams coming up with the saves to keep the game tied. A turnover by Potsdam gave the Red Dragons the ball for the chance that saw Schettino score the game-winner for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta State is on the road this Tuesday at Ithaca College for a game that begins at 4:00 p.m.
