Oneonta State vs. Rpi
March 4, 2006
The Game Story:
Junior attackman Pete Glass (Hurley, NY/Kingston) took a feed from sophomore Tyler Dunne (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and put a shot by Rensselaer goalie with seven seconds remaining in regulation to give the Red Dragons a thrilling 7-6 victory in its 2006 season opener today in sub-20 degree weather at All-College
Field.
It looked as though Oneonta had control of the game when Glass, who scored four goals on the afternoon, put Oneonta ahead 6-4 with 1:12 left in the game.
The visitors came storming back in the final minute with two goals in the span of 17 seconds to tie the game at six apiece. Senior Peter Rice (West Hartford, CT/Conard) cut Oneonta's lead to 6-5 with 31 seconds remaining on an unassisted goal. Classmate Chris Sherman (Newark, DE/St. Marks) tied the game at six apiece just 17 seconds later on another unassisted goal as he walked right in on the Oneonta goalie.
From the beginning of the game it was apparent that both teams were content to control the ball and work for their opportunities. Oneonta held a 2-0 lead after one period on goals from freshman Matt Harvey (Bayshore, NY/Islip), who got the Red Dragons on the scoreboard first midway through the opening period. Glass notched his first goal of the game at the 2:06 mark with an assist from classmate Mike Schanz (Endwell, NY/Maine Endwell).
Oneonta went ahead 3-0 on Glass' second goal at the 9:56 mark of the second period.
Rensselaer finally broke through with just over seven minutes left in the period on a goal by Sherman assisted by senior Adam LoGiudice (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa). The Red Hawks struck quickly for their second goal of the game just 90 seconds
later. Sophomore Alex MacDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored unassisted to cut Oneonta's lead to 3-2, which is where the game stood at halftime.
The two teams went scoreless in the third period, which set the drama for the fourth period when the two teams combined for eight goals.
In his first start in goal for Oneonta, junior Brian Tricoles (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) made 12 saves to pick up the win. Junior Ryan Michels (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made five saves in taking the loss for the Red Hawks.
Oneonta will be back in action this Wednesday at home against Scranton beginning at 4:00 p.m.
