| The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team exploded for five goals in the fourth quarter en route to an 11-8 win against Scranton this afternoon in non conference lacrosse action. The game was tied at 6 apiece before the Red Dragons ran off five straight goals in a span of five minutes including three goals by freshman George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip). Oneonta is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2002 season when they came out of the gates 4-0 in coach Stewart Moan's first season at the helm. The loss for Scranton dropped them to 0-2 in the early season. Oneonta led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter on unassisted goals by sophomore Tim Burns (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and freshman Matt Harvey (Bayshore, NY/Islip). Scranton's goal in the opening quarter came with 29 seconds remaining by junior Dan Stallone (S. Plainfield, NJ/St. Joseph Metuchen) on a man-up opportunity. The two teams each tallied two goals in the second quarter including a second man-up goal by Stallone that tied the game at 3 apiece. Junior Mike Schanz (Endwell, NY/Maine Endwell) gave Oneonta its lead back with a goal at the 8:26 mark. The two teams then went scoreless the rest of the way for a 4-3 halftime lead for the hosts. Oneonta struck first in the third quarter on Harvey's second goal of the game to give the Red Dragons a two-goal lead early. The Royals battled back with three goals in the quarter allowing only one to Oneonta to send the game to the fourth deadlocked. Junior Kyle Overs (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made seven saves for Oneonta in picking up his second win in as many outings. Junior Tom Davis (Media, PA/Penncrest) made 10 saves in goal for the Royals. Oneonta will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Alfred University for a game beginning at 1:00 p.m. |
