No. 11 Union men's lacrosse earns 19-6 win at Oneonta State

Sophomore attack Rob Santangelo had five goals and two assists in a 19-6 win at Oneonta State.

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior attack Ted McKenna and sophomore attack Rob Santangelo each had five goals, and senior goalie Sean Aaron made 14 saves to help lead No. 11 Union men's lacrosse (1-1) to a 19-6 win over Oneonta State (0-2) at All College Field. Union led 8-5 at the half and put the clamps on the Red Dragons attack to the tune of 11-1 in the second half.

Junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk led Oneonta with four goals on the afternoon. He also won 16-of-22 face offs as the Red Dragons won 20-of-28 for the game.

Sophomore Nate Greenberg got things started for Union with the game's first goal at 12:58. Van de Veerdonk answered less than five seconds later with his first goal of the game after winning the face off.

Union then scored three unanswered including a pair by sophomore Rob Santangelo as Union jumped to a 4-1 lead.

The Red Dragons came back to tie the score at 4 apiece with three straight goals of their own. Sophomore Joey Finnegan, junior Tyler Jennings and van de Veerdonk each scored for Oneonta.

A late goal by Santangelo gave Union a 5-4 lead at the end of the first stanza.

Back-to-back goals by McKenna to begin the second period extended Union's lead to 7-4. A van de Veerdonk goal brought Oneonta closer at 7-5, but McKenna scored his third goal of the period with seven seconds left gave the Dutchmen an 8-5 lead at halftime.

After van de Veerdonk scored the opening goal of the third period, Union shut out the Red Dragons the rest of the way while adding 11 goals.

McKenna and Santangelo also added two assists to total seven points on the afternoon.

Oneonta goalie Chris Miles took the loss in goal, but made 15 stops.
