| In its biggest offensive output of the young season, Oneonta State rang
the bell 17 times in picking up a non-conference win this afternoon against
Union. The hosts scored all the goals it would need in the first quarter en
route to registering its second win of the season in its home opener. The Red
Dragons are now 2-3 overall while the loss for the Dutchmen drops them to 0-3.|
Oneonta wasted no time in jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 2:42
of the game. Senior Brian Balash (Auburn, NY/Auburn), who would finish with
four goals on the day, opened the scoring for Oneonta when he took a pass from
junior Arie Claflin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and fired it by the Union goalie.
Claflin would add a goal of his own while setting up a second goal in helping
the Red Dragons secure a 5-2 lead after the opening quarter of play. Senior
midfielder Matt Murphy (Armonk, NY/Byram Mills) scored both goals for Union in
the first quarter.
Oneonta shut Union out in the second and third quarters 7-0 to take a
12-2 lead into the fourth quarter. Eight different players scored for the Red
Dragons including a man-up goal by Balash that made the score 6-2 at the 10:20
mark of the second quarter. Sophomore attacker Pete Gross (Larchmont,
NY/Salisbury) finally broke Union's scoring drought at the 8:29 mark of the
fourth quarter to make the score 15-3. The goal by Gross snapped a streak of
11 straight goals for the Red Dragons that started in the opening quarter of
play. A pair of goals by Oneonta State junior Ryan Henry (West Babylon,
NY/West Babylon) and another goal by Gross for Union brought the game to its
final of 17-4.
Oneonta's next game on the schedule is this coming Wednesday when they
travel down the hill to face city-rival Hartwick College at 4:00 p.m. The last
three regular season games between the two teams have all been one-goal games
including two decided in overtime.
