Third quarter collapse dooms Lakers in 14-7 loss to 20th-ranked Nazareth

The Oswego State menís lacrosse team stayed close with 20th-ranked Nazareth College in the opening two quarters of play, but the Golden Flyers used a 7-1 third quarter to put the game out of reach en route to a 14-7 victory in the Lakersí home opener on Friday, March 13 on Laker Field.

Sophomore Cam Davoy (Baldwinsville/CW Baker) and junior Dan Scarrazo (Fairport) each scored a pair of goal, with Scarrazo adding an assists, while senior Mike Brewster (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) added a goal and an assist for the Lakers (1-3), who trailed the Golden Flyers (3-0), 5-2, in a slow-paced first half. Nazareth held a 21-19 advantage in shots, despite being outshot 11-9 by Oswego in the second quarter.

Nazareth scored twice to open the third quarter, taking a 7-2 lead at the 8:38 mark, before Oswego scored on a man-up advantage with a goal from sophomore Pat Decker (Spencerport) at 10:07. The Golden Flyers would put the game away with five unanswered goals in a span of 1:36 to take a commanding 12-3 lead going into the final quarter.

Oswego outscored the Golden Flyers 4-2 in the final quarter, with four different players tallying scores for the Lakers. Each team registered a pair of man-up goals in the period, with Nazareth finishing 4-for-5 in extra-man scores and the Lakers going 3-for-7.

Junior Mark DiCirce led all scorers with four goals and added an assist, while sophomore Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar registered a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists for Nazareth, who despite committing 18 turnovers, outshot Oswego by a 40-34 margin and led in ground balls, 56-29.

Todd Dermody made 14 saves in goal for Nazareth, while Oswego junior Judd Robinson (Guilderland) made 11 saves.

The Lakers will return to Laker Field on Wednesday, March 18 to face unbeaten Rochester Institute of Technology in a 4:00 p.m. non-league contest.
