Oswego State vs. Union

The Game Story:
OSWEGO, NY Ė The Union College menís lacrosse team fought off a late Oswego State offensive surge to defeat the Lakers, 9-8, at Laker Lacrosse Field Tuesday afternoon. Union was led by three goals from Chris Collison (Trumbull, CT/ Trumbull) and 14 saves from senior captain Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan) as the Dutchmen handed the Lakers their fourth-straight loss. Dan Rogers (Boston, NY/ Frontier) led Oswego with three goals and an assist.

Freshman Anthony Savaglio (Jericho, VT/ Mt. Mansfield Union) started the scoring for the Dutchmen (3-4, 0-1 Liberty League) with his first career goal, an unassisted tally, with 7:50 left in the first stanza. Charles Hovsepian (Hingham, MA/ Hingham) and Bill Condon (West Hartford, CT/ Conard) added goals just over a minute apart late in the quarter to give the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead at the end of the frame.

Oswego (2-4) got on the board at 4:47 of the second quarter on an unassisted tally from Rogers. The Dutchmen responded with a man-up goal from Douglas Richardson (Lynnfield, MA/ Gov. Dummer) with 3:39 left in the half before John Schumacher (Webster, NY/ Webster-Thomas) picked up his first of three goals in the game with 1:50 remaining on the man advantage.

The Lakers outscored the Dutchmen, 4-3, in the third quarter on a pair of man-up goals from Schumacher and goals from Rogers and Mike Strohm (Waterloo, NY/ Waterloo). Strohm opened the half with a goal seven seconds into the frame. Rogers won the opening faceoff and scooped up the ball as he broke down the right side of the field before he connected with Strohm. Rogers faked high and shot low past Oram at 4:31 of the third before Union answered with a pair of Collison scores. Schumacher closed out the frame, netting the first of his two goals of the frame on a diving tip-in off a shot by Mike Brewster (E. Syracuse, NY/ E. Syracuse-Minoa).

The Dutchmen held a 7-6 lead headed into the final quarter, but Mike Recor (Kirkville, NY/ E. Syracuse-Minoa) tied up the game 5:48 into the quarter. Union regained the lead on Collisonís 15th goal of the season with 4:29 left to play, and took a two-goal lead when Scott Garibaldi (Summit, NJ/ Summit) scooped a ball under Oswego State goaltender Matt Pfister (Patchogue, NY/ Patchogue-Medford) just under two minutes later.

The Lakers threatened late, as Rogers brought Oswego within one with 15 seconds left in the game, and threw a long, low shot as time expired, but Oram cleanly scooped up the ball.

Oram finished the day with a season-high-tying 14 saves, while Pfister stopped 15, including six in the final quarter.

Union is back in action when the Dutchmen face Clarkson on Saturday, April 7, in a 1 p.m. Liberty League game in Potsdam, NY. Oswego travels to Morrisville for a 4 p.m. game on Thursday before opening SUNYAC play at Brockport on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
