|OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State men's lacrosse team suffered (7-1, 0-1 SUNYAC) its first loss of the season in the conference opener to Brockport (5-5, 0-1 SUNYAC), 12-5, Friday afternoon.|
Winning the opening face-off was key to Brockport's strategy. It held the ball for over three minutes in the Laker defensive zone before Riley Austin finally scored with an assist for Alex Austin. The Golden Eagles dominated the first period, scoring three more off the sticks of Nate Thomas, Jesse Elliott and Riley Austin. The first quarter ended with the score at 4-0 in Brockport's favor.
A penalty on Brockport early in the second allowed Oswego State to get on the board when Cody Hoose (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) scored the marker off a pass from Chris Porten (So., Auburn, N.Y.). Just over a minute later, senior Britt Leone (Schenectady, N.Y.) capitalized on another man-up advantage for the Lakers, cutting the Golden Eagle lead to 4-2.
Brockport's Thomas answered the goal with one of his own with about nine minutes to go in the second. Alex Austin finished up the scoring in the second with two unassisted goals for the Golden Eagles, putting the score 7-2 at halftime.
Oswego State started strong in the third, winning a face off and getting it immediately into the Brockport zone. Less than a minute later, Porten scored a goal for the Lakers after being on the receiving end of a pass from Hoose. Brockport's Riley Austin responded to make the margin five goals at 8-3.
Leone found Connor Khammar (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) for his tenth goal of the season for Oswego State with 7:16 to play in the third, but Golden Eagle Bryon Palmer answered back minutes later. With a minute left in the quarter, Leone scored his second goal of the day, unassisted, to make the score, 9-5, heading into the fourth.
Brockport controlled much of the action in the fourth quarter., as it scored all three fourth quarter goals. The first came from Bryon Palmer followed by both remaining goals being score by Riley Austin.
Oswego State's goalie Ian O'Brien (Sr., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) played all but the waning moments of the game, recording ten saves in the losing effort. Cory Banwaree picked up the win in the cage for Brockport after posting eight saves.
The Golden Eagles owned a decisive 25-11 advantage in ground balls, and tallied 11 turnovers compared to 19 for the home team.
