Potsdam State vs. Cortland State

The Game Story:
The Potsdam laxmen fell 17-6 in Saturday’s home conference contest with the Red Dragons of Cortland. The Bears now move to 4-5 overall (1-1 SUNYAC) while Cortland advances to 7-2 (1-0).

Potsdam came out strong and kept pace with the Dragons early in the first quarter holding the score at 1-1 for nearly 10 minutes. Nationally ranked Cortland eventually took over game scoring to finish with 5 goals in the first quarter. Cortland added 6 more goals in the second then 3 each in the final two periods. After going scoreless in the second period, the Bears mounted a rally in the third quarter to net 4 goals but still came up short with a single in the fourth.

Mike Abbot (Syracuse, Nottingham) and Kyle Lambert (Brentwood, Brentwood) led Cortland with 5 goals each. Matt Vaverchak (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) led the Bears with 3 goals followed by Travis Holmes (Jamesville Dewitt/Herkimer CC) with 1 goal and 2 assists.

Goalkeeper Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) had 4 saves in first half play for Cortland. Michael Robinson (Alexandria, VA. /Thomas Edison) and Mike Paolucci (Apalachin/Vestal) saw second half action for the Red Dragons with 2 and 3 saves respectively. Brian Hondorf (Webster-Schroeder/MCC) had 4 saves in first half play for Potsdam. Reliever Tim Neer (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) had 8 saves in second half action for the Bears.

Potsdam will look to rebound Wednesday, April 12 when they host SUNY Oneonta at 4pm.
