March 11, 2010
The Game Story:
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Freshman goalie James Manchester stopped all nine shots he faced to lead the Rensselaer men's lacrosse team to an 8-0 win over SUNY Potsdam in a non-league game. With the victory the Engineers stay unbeaten on the young season, improving to 3-0. The Bears fall to 1-1.

Manchester (Niskayuna, NY) improved his personal record to 3-0 with the first shutout of his career. He outdueled fellow Niskayuna High School graduate Billy Richards (Niskayuna, NY), a senior who made 11 saves for Potsdam.

Offensively for the Engineers, junior attack Nick Billy (Redding, CT / Joel Barlow) paced the team with three goals and an assist. He scored the first goal of the game, assisted on the second - which was scored man-up by freshman Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA / The Hill School) and then put RPI ahead by four and five goals. His last two markers came in the third quarter.

Rensselaer added three more goals in the fourth quarter, a period in which they outshot Potsdam by a 15-2 count and held an 18-6 advantage in ground balls. Senior Paul Cerone (Ritchfield, CT / Ritchfield), who scored the third goal of the game and assisted on the fifth, and junior Conor Chocheles (Babylon, NY / Babylon) accounted for RPI's final three goals.

The Engineers held a 33-16 edge in shots in the game and had 23 more ground balls (46-23) than the Bears. Both teams had seven man-up opportunities, with Rensselaer connecting once.

RPI is back in action on Wednesday at Oneonta State. Potsdam hosts Cazenovia next Wednesday afternoon. Both games begin at 4pm.
