| ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to
a 6-1 lead after one quarter en route to an 11-2 victory at
Randolph-Macon on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Generals
improved to 9-3 overall, including a 5-1 mark in the ODAC.
W&L assumed a 2-0 lead five minutes into the contest as freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) found the net at the 13:26 mark off an assist from senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) and sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) netted a goal off an assist from junior defender Matt Conners (Burke, Va./Robinson) at the 9:58 mark. Following a Yellow Jacket tally with 8:47 left in the first period, the Generals rattled off four straight goals to claim a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes of action. Fink added two more goals during the run, while senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) and junior midfielder Tom Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) chipped in with one goal apiece. After a scoreless second period, Molinelli extended the Generals lead to 7-1 with a goal at the 8:06 mark of the third period off an assist from sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius). Randolph-Macon's Drew Samaras scored his team's second goal with 2:27 left in the third period before Martin added a score of his own with 27 seconds left to provide W&L with an 8-2 lead after three periods. The Generals added three more goals in the final period for the final margin. Fink and Molinelli scored three goals each, while Martin contributed a goal and two assists. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) posted eight saves between the pipes. Yellow Jacket (6-8, 2-4) goalkeeper F.J. Federico played the first 53 minutes and registered 20 saves. He was relieved by Alex Sklar for the final seven minutes. Sklar made two saves. W&L concludes its regular season schedule on Saturday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 1:30 pm. |
