Rit vs. Mercyhurst

The Game Story:
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- NCAA Division II No. 7 Mercyhurst used strong defense and ball control to build an 8-2 halftime lead against Rochester Institute of Technology and withstood a late fourth-quarter run to prevail 14-9 Wednesday afternoon.

Mercyhurst scored three goals in the first quarter and six of the first seven goals to pull ahead 6-1 with 11:54 to go in the second quarter. Dan James scored two of his three goals in the first half to lead the Lakers.

Mercyhurst opened the second half with goals by Andrew Sands who also finished with a hat-trick, Scott Janssen and James. RIT freshman Dave Demuth closed out the third quarter scoring with a man-up marker from Zach Bednarz to trail 11-3.

Following Jerod Felice's third goal of the game to put the Lakers ahead 12-3 just 13 seconds into the fourth quarter, RIT went on a 5-0 run to close the gap to 12-8 with 7:13 to go in the game. Chris Copeland score four of the Tigers' goals in the run and finished the game with five goals and one assist.

However, Mercyhurst scored two goals to regain a comfortable six-goal cushion with 2:34 to go. RIT rookie David Thering capped off the scoring at 2:11 with his second of the game from Craig Rubino.

The biggest factor of the game for Mercyhurst was ball control as the Lakers controlled face-offs winning 18-of-26 and out ground balled RIT 72-45 including 37-17 in the first half.

RIT concludes its regular season with "Senior Day" hosting Empire 8 foe Ithaca on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
