|ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (4-2) men's lacrosse team won their fourth straight game defeating #6 SUNY Genseo (4-1) 16-9 in non-conference action on Sunday. The Tigers used a strong second half to hand the Knights their first loss of the season.|
RIT out shot Geneseo 40-20 and won the ground ball battle 50-31. The Tigers won 19-of-29 face offs and were 16-of-18 on clearing opportunities. RIT held the Knights to 15-for-30 on clears.
Junior midfielder Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) led RIT with five goals on the day. Sean Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/Albany Academy), Adam Lehmann (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit), Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) and David Burke (Fairport, NY/Fairport) each had two goals and an assist. Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) chipped in with four assists.
Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) won 18-of-29 face offs and had a team-high eight ground balls. Senior defenseman Dan McRae had seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. M.J. Kiekebelt had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kevin Rattigan (Chicago, IL/Western Reserve Academy) picked up his second win of the season.
Craig Lange and Brendan Kurpis led Geneseo with three goals apiece. Dennis Costanza took the loss allowing eight goals and making 14 saves.
The first half was tight throughout. RIT scored first on Cherami's first tally of the day. Lange answered back for Geneseo tying the score at 8:56 of the first quarter.
Burke gave the Tigers the lead back early in the second quarter. Chris Adams tied the score at two for the Knights, but MacIntosh made it 3-2 with 6:29 to play in the half.
Scott Cost and Kurpis scored two straight goals for the Knights to give Geneseo their only lead of the game late in the second quarter.
David Burke ripped a shot with 26 seconds remaining in the half to tie the score at 4-4.
Gillies and Lehmann opened the second half with goals to give RIT a 6-4 lead and the Tigers never looked back.
RIT out scored the Knights 12-5 in the second half, including four straight to end the third quarter. Cherami had two of his five goals in the third quarter.
The Tigers scored four straight in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Cherami had two in the fourth and MacIntosh had a goal and an assist.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, March 24 when the Tigers host Clarkson University. Game time is at 4 pm on RIT's Turf Field.
