|OCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's lacrosse team began the 2008 campaign with a 9-1 victory over Gordon College (0-1) on cold and snowy afternoon at RIT's Turf Field. The Tigers came into the game ranked 14th in the USILA Coaches Poll.|
Senior midfielder Andy Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) had three goals and Dan Rago (Geneva, NY) added a pair of goals and freshman Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/E. Syracuse Minoa) added a pair of assists.
RIT got off to a slow start, leading 1-0 after the first quarter and 2-1 at half time. The Tigers offense got on track in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Scots, 7-0.
Chris Ferry (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored the first quarters lone goal at 8:21 on an assist from Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/N. Stafford), giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Ruocco made it 2-0 RIT with the first of his three goals on the afternoon. Vlassis had the assist on the play at 6:59 of the second.
Jordan MacIntosh scored Gordon's lone goal of the game at 5:47 of the second quarter, cutting RIT's lead to 2-1.
The Tigers offense scored three goals in the third and four goals in the fourth to put the game out of reach. RIT's defense was outstanding, holding The Fighting Scots to one goal, 0-for-2 on man-up and held the face-off advantage 50-35.
Ruocco opened the second-half scoring at 11:38 of the third quarter, making it 3-1 RIT.
David Burke (Fairport, NY) scored his first collegiate goal at 10:28 of the third, giving RIT a 4-1 lead.
Dan Rago scored two straight goals to end the third and start the fourth quarters, extending RIT's lead to 6-1.
Sean Gillies (Oakville ON/Albany Academy), Jacob Brunner (Lafayette, NY), who added an assists, and Ruocco rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter for RIT.
Brad Conlon (Ottawa, ON/Bridgeton Academy) picked up the win for RIT, making four saves. Phil Davenport (New Market, MD/Linganore) had a team-high seven ground balls and Jacob Tuller (Corning, NY/Corning East) had five.
RIT will face #4 Roanoke College on Wednesday, March 5 at 3:30 pm in Salem Virginia.
