Rit vs. Hartwick

The Game Story:
ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's lacrosse team (13-2, 6-1 Empire 8) celebrated Senior day and finished its 2006 regular season with a 22-5 win over conference rival Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon in a driving rainstorm at RIT Field. Senior Dave Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had five goals and three assists to become RIT's all-time leading point scorer.

Thering broke the record with 6:04 left in the second quarter, taking a feed from Stephen Papa (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and slipping a shot in front past Hartwick goaltender Jason Fautas. Thering broke the record of 275 points, held by Ben Hunt, who played at RIT from 1995-99. Thering now has 80 points on the season and 281 for his career.

The Tigers scored 19 of the final 21 goals in the contest and dominated play in every way. RIT out-shot Hartwick 61-14 and recorded a season-best 78 ground balls to Hartwick's 42. Senior Jacob Cannan (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) and sophomore Jacob Brunner (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) combined to win 25-of-29 faceoffs. Cannan was 14-of-15, Brunner, 11-for-14. RIT's riding was also excellent, has they harassed Hartwick's defense and midfielders all afternoon. Hartwick converted just 18-of-37 clear attempts.

Eric Pritchard (Webster, NY/Webster) scored a season-high seven goals, while Scott Farress (Webster, NY/Webster) added two goals and two assists.

RIT got off to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Pritchard and Thering. Hartwick cut the lead to one on a goal by Dan Hushion. Senior Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster) gave RIT a 3-1 lead midway through the quarter. Hartwick scored two goals in less than a minute later in the quarter, one by Mike Debrossy and the other by Lee Austin to tie the game at three.

From there however, RIT turned up the intensity and scored the game's next six goals to go up 9-3 in the second quarter. After Hartwick cut the Tiger lead to 9-4, RIT tallied the final three goals of the first half to take a 12-4 lead at halftime.

RIT continued its strong play in the third quarter, out-scoring Hartwick 7-1 to take a 19-5 lead after 45 minutes of play.

John Foley (Guelph, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) made three saves to pick up his 13th win of the season. Senior Alex VanderEls (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) made three fourth quarter saves. Fautas made 24 saves for Hartwick.

Nine different players scored at least one goal for RIT and 14 Tigers had at least one point. Dan Jernick (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) scored his first goal of the season, while freshman Gene Arkhipov (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) picked up his first collegiate point with a fourth-quarter assist.

RIT's defense was also superb, allowing just 14 shots and frustrating the Hawks offense. Jacob Tuller (Corning, NY/Corning East), Mike Crowley (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury), Chris Bulawa (Camillus, NY/West Genesee), Phil Davenport (Linganore, MD/Linganore), Steve Snyder (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Rob Mizelle (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford) were part of the Tigers excellent defensive effort on Saturday.

RIT will be the #2 seed in next weekend's Empire 8 Tournament and will host #3 Nazareth on Friday afternoon. Ithaca is the #1 seed in the tournament and will be host #4 St. John Fisher in the other semifinal.
