|Men's Lacrosse Beats Oswego to go 3-0|
Senior Josh Molinari had a goal and four assists to help RIT to a 12-6 win over Oswego State on Saturday.
ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (3-0) men's lacrosse team used a strong second half to bdefeat Oswego State (0-2), 12-6 this afternoon at RIT Field. The Tigers outscored the Lakers 8-2 in the second half to break a close game open.
The first half was tightly contested throughout. Oswego took a 1-0 lead with 6:43 to play in the first quarter on an even strength goal by Jeff Salisbury. RIT came back and tied it when Chris Copeland (Webster, NY) scored on an assist from Colin Jesien (Cumberland, MD) with 5:59 to play in the first. Mike Malecki gave Oswego the lead back with 3:32 to play in the opening quarter on an assist from Steve Tronovitch. With 12 seconds to play in the quarter senior Ryan Neward (Williamsville, NY) tied the game at 2-2 with the first of his three goals of the day.
Brandon Mapes gave Oswego the lead back to open the second quarter on his unassisted goal. After Chris Copeland tied the score at 3-3 David Thering (Fairport, NY) gave the Tigers their first lead of the day when he scored on an assist from Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY) with 2:20 to play in the second quarter. The Tigers' lead was shortlived, however, as Oswego answered right back on a goal by Mike Malecki with 28 seconds to play in the half, tying the score at 4-4.
RIT opened things up in the second half. They opned the third quarter scoring four straight goals and never looked back. Ryan Neward and David Thering each scored a man-up goal to give RIT a 6-4 lead. Chris Copeland rounded out the scoring in the third quarter with a pair of goals, giving the Tigers an 8-4 lead.
Oswego's Mike Malecki tallied his third goal of the day early in the fourth quarter to cut RIT's lead to 8-5 but that's as close as the Lakers would get as RIT scored three straight goals. Josh Molinari (Oswego, NY) sandwiched a goal in between two Thering goals, giving RIT an 12-5 lead. Malecki scored a late goal for Oswego to make the final score 12-6.
RIT outshot Oswego 47-22, including 23-10 in the second half. The Tigers had 60 ground balls and won 15-of-22 faceoffs. RIT's extra man offense was 2-for-5 on the day, while the man-down unit held Oswego scoreless on their only opportunity.
Josh Molinari and David Thering led the Tigers with five points apiece. Molinari had a goal and four assists, while Thering had four goals and an assist. Ryan Neward and Chris Copeland each had four points. Neward had three goals and an assist, while Copeland added four goals.
Adam George (Lafayette, NY) was outstanding on faceoffs, winning 14-of-20 draws he took and had four ground balls. Mike Lachut (Fulton, NY) and Jonathan Manley (Keuka Park, NY) each had eight ground balls to lead RIT, while Ryan Neward added seven. In goal John Foley (Guelph, Ont.) made just nine saves, allowing six goals as RIT's defense turned in a stellar performance.
RIT will host Geneseo State on Wednesday, March 17. That game gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
