|The Game Story:|
|ROCHESTER, NY – The eighth-ranked RIT men’s lacrosse team used a balanced scoring attack to improve to 12-2 (5-1 Empire 8) and clinch a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament after defeating Utica 14-4 on Wednesday afternoon at RIT Field.|
Seven different Tigers scored goals, as they out-scored Utica 8-1 in the second half.
As has been the case all season, RIT out-shot its opponent, holding a 62-19 edge in today’s game. RIT also held a huge edge in ground balls, 52-30. Phil Davenport (Linganore, MD/Linganore), the conference leader in ground balls, added nine more and was a catalyst on defense along with Jacob Tuller (Corning, NY/Corning East) and Chris Bulawa (Camillus, NY/West Genesee).
Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster) opened the scoring for the Tigers just 2:07 in, making a brilliant individual effort, going around two defenders and bouncing a shot past Utica goaltender Sean Ryan.
David Demuth (Jordan, NY/Jordan-Elbridge), Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) and Eric Pritchard (Webster, NY/Webster) added goals to give RIT a 4-0 lead.
Dave Misiaszek tallied for Utica with 13 seconds left in the opening quarter to cut the RIT lead to 4-1 after the opening 15 minutes of play.
Misiaszek tallied again, this time 13 seconds into the second quarter to make it a 4-2 game.
Ruocco gave RIT its three-goal lead back with a man-up goal 4:04 into the quarter. Pritchard followed suit just over two minutes later, tallying his second of the day to make the score 6-2.
After Utica’s Ryan McGowan made the score 6-3 midway through the half, Pritchard picked up a loose ball in front and fed a wide open Scott Farress (Webster, NY/Webster) who found the back of the net to give RIT the 7-3 advantage at the half.
RIT came out firing in the second half, out-scoring Utica 5-1 in the third quarter to take a commanding 11-4 lead.
David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport) gave RIT a five-goal lead just 25 seconds into the quarter, slipping out from behind the Pioneers net and ripping a low shot against the mesh.
Farress put RIT up 9-3 3:29 into the third, scoping up a ground ball in front of the Pioneers net and firing it home for his second of the day. Pritchard then netted his third of the day at the midway point of the third, converting a fast break pass from Tuller for the hat-trick.
Farress then found Pritchard all alone at the side of the Pioneers net once again to make it 11-3.
Joe Argese (Jordan, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) took a pass from Dan Jernick (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) to make it 12-4 with just over nine minutes left. Bednarz made it 13-4 a little over a minute later and closed out the scoring with his third of the day with just over four minutes left.
John Foley (Guelph, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) made six saves to pick up the win. Ryan made 21 saves in the losing effort for the Pioneers, who fall to 7-5 and 3-3 in the Empire 8.
Pritchard led RIT with four goals and two assists. Bednarz scored three times and dished out an assist, while Farress added two goals and two helpers.
RIT can finish no worse than third in the conference standings and could be the top seed in next weekend's tournament depending on what happens this weekend.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, as host Hartwick College in the regular season finale at 1 p.m.
