| ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Josh Molinari (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) registered six
points with two goals and four assists to lead the Rochester Institute
of Technology men's lacrosse teams to a 17-6 victory against Utica
College in Empire 8 action Tuesday afternoon at RIT Field.
The Tigers (6-4, 3-1 Empire 8) held a 4-1 advantage after the first quarter on goals by four different scorers. Chris Copeland (Webster, N.Y./Webster) opened the scoring from Ryan Neward (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) at 9:59 and then 42 seconds later Molinari fed Geoff Selleck (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) to take a 2-0 lead. Molinari found RIT leading goal-scorer Dan Tushcong (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) at the 6:12 and Andrew Pratt (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) closed out the Tigers' first-quarter scoring. Utica's lone goal came from Matt Bolen (Bern Bay, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) who finished with three of the Pioneers' six goals on the afternoon. Pratt scored a pair of goals in the second and Molinari, Tuschong, Copeland and Selleck added a goal apiece to build a comfortable 10-2 lead at the half. The Tigers' defense picked up where it left off in its 14-13 upset victory against Nazareth last Saturday by shutting out Utica in the third quarter. RIT thwarted both Pioneer man-up chances and limited them to just six total shots (three on goal). While the defense was strong again, the offense was able to expand its lead to 14-2 with goals by Chris Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East), Adam Bernhardt (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), Rob DiGiore (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville) and Dan Guckian (Victor, N.Y./McQuaid). With a big match-up for the Tigers hosting Hartwick on Saturday and a big 14-2 lead entering the fourth quarter, RIT head coach Gene Peluso went deep into his bench in the final quarter. Craig Rubino (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid) and Jeffrey Sweet (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) recorded their first goals of the year for the Tigers. Jeff DePietro (Jordan, N.Y./Jordan-Elbridge) scored two of Utica's fourth-quarter goals, while Matt Donaldson (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) added two assists. The Tigers split goaltending duties on the day with Chris James (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) playing the first half recording seven save and allowed two goals, while Jon Sinclair (Herndon, Va./Herndon) played the second half making five stops and allowing four goals. Bruce Wright played 53:48 posting 12 saves and allowing 16 goals, while Jake Mailison (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) played the final 6:12 of the first quarter and allowed one goal. The Empire 8 regular-season title race is wide-open with RIT (lost to Alfred 11-10 in 2ot), Ithaca (lost to Hartwick 12-10), Hartwick (lost to Nazareth 21-12) and Nazareth (lost to RIT 14-13) all at 3-1. The Tigers control their own destiny in claiming the title with wins against Hartwick on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. and at Ithaca on Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m. |
