|SYLVAN LAKE, FL -- The RIT men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 with a 12-9 victory over York College (PA) on Monday afternoon in Sylvan Lake, Florida.|
The Tigers picked up the win despite being out shot by the Spartans 36-35. RIT won the ground ball battle 57-44 but went 0-for-2 with the man advantage. The Tigers held York to a pair of man-up goals in eight tries.
RIT won 15-of-25 face-offs. Jerry Ragonese (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) led the Tigers, winning 12-of-16 face-offs he took.
Cody Schroeder-Young (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) led RIT with three points on two goals and an assist. Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy), Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) and David Burke (Fairport, NY) each had a pair of goals. Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) had a pair of assists.
Dan McRae (Oakville, ON/Trinity) led RIT with six ground balls. Jimmy Walsh (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) grabbed five ground balls and Craig Nairn (Fairport, NY) and Alex Crepinsek (Mississauga, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) each had four for the Tigers.
RIT jumped out to 2-0 lead early in the first quarter on goals by David Burke and Cody Schroeder-Young.
After a York goal cut the lead to 2-1 Sean Gillies (Oakville, ON/Albany Academy) made it 3-1 on an unassisted goal with 8:34 to play in the quarter.
York's Adam Cooper cut RIT's lead to 3-2 with a man-up goal with 36 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
Josh Gamble tied the game at 3-3 with 8:03 remaining in the second quarter on an unassisted goal.
A.J. Tingle gave RIT a 4-3 lead on an unassisted goal with a little over five minutes remaining in the half.
The Spartans answered back with goals from Gamble and Bradford Blaker late in the quarter to take a 5-4 lead.
Kelso Davis tied the score with two seconds remaining in the half. The Tigers cleared the ball nicely down the field with time running out in the half. Schroeder-Young found Davis cutting to the net and he scored to tie the score at 5-5 at the half.
Tingle opened the second half scoring twenty-two seconds into the third quarter giving RIT a 6-5 lead. It was Tingle's second of the afternoon.
Ryan Schab answered right back for York, tying the score with an unassisted goal with 13:12 to play in the third quarter.
Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Satfford) tallied his first goal of the season with 7:44 to play in the third, giving RIT a 7-6 lead.
The Spartans ran off two straight goals, taking an 8-7 lead with 4:38 to play in the quarter.
Chris Cherami tied the score at 8 with a nice sweeping run to the goal with 2:57 to play in the third quarter.
Schroeder-Young took a feed from Adam Vlassis with 9:48 to play in the fourth quarter, giving RIT a slim 9-8 lead.
Cherami scored his second of the game on another nice individual play with 7:27 to play to give the Tigers a two goal lead at 10-8.
David Burke made it 11-8 with 2:41 to play, culminating a man-down clear by the Tigers with the short-handed goal.
Kalen Roundy pulled York to within two goals late in the contest but Kelso Davis put the game away with his second goal of the game with 1:24 remaining.
Kevin Rattigan (Chicago, IL/Western Reserve Academy) picked up the win for the Tigers allowing 11 goals and making 10 saves. Chris Collins took the loss for York allowing 12 goals and making 10 saves.
RIT will host Rensselaer on Sunday afternoon at 12 pm on RIT's Turf Field.
