|ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's lacrosse team was defeated by St. John Fisher College (10-2, 3-2 E8) 12-11 in Empire 8 action on Wednesday afternoon on RIT Field. The loss drops RIT to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8.|
RIT out shot the Cardinals 40-30 but lost the ground ball battle 58-48 and lost 10-of-16 face-offs. The Tigers went 2-for-5 with the extra mand while St. John Fisher went 4-for-7.
Adam Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) NYled RIT with four points on two goals and two assists. Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy) had two goals and an assist and Adam Lehmann (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) and Sean Gillies (Oakville, ON/Albany Academy) each had a pair of goals.
Dan MacRae (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) played a strong game defensively, grabbing four ground balls and causing four turnovers. Alex Crepinsek (Mississauga, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) also had four ground balls. Robert Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT) took the loss in net. He allowed 12 goals and made eight saves.
RIT never led in the contest, trailing by as many as four goals in the third quarter. The Cardinals scored the first two goals of the contest before Kelso Davis tallied RIT's first goal with 1:03 to play in the first quarter on an assist from Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ?Seton Hall Prep).
Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY) scored his first collegiate goal 1:20 into the second quarter. It was a man-up goal on an assist from Davis that tied the score at 2-2.
Connor Henderson scored the first of his four goals to give St. John Fisher a 3-2 lead.
Adam Lehmann tied the score at 3-3 on an unassisted goal at 6:49 of the second quarter.
The Cardinals closed out the first half scoring three straight goals, leading RIT 7-4 at halftime.
Kelso Davis pulled RIT to within two goals with his second tally of the game at 5:50 of the third quarter on an assist from Vlassis.
The Cardinals answered with two straight goals, taking a 9-5 lead on a goal by Paul Leonhard.
The Tigers were able to get a goal as the horn sounded ending the third quarter, cutting Fisher's lead down to 9-7. Billy Walton (Syracuse, NY?Nottingham) sprinted down the field on a clear. He flung the ball towards the crease and Vlassis somehow came up with the ball and flung it into the goal as the horn sounded.
A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) made it a one-goal game early in the fourth quarter when he scored his lone goal of the afternoon on an assist from Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) just 18 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Jeff Price and Henderson scored consecutive goals for the Cardinals, increasing their lead to 11-8.
Bressler kept RIT's hopes alive with an unassisted goal with 5:48 to play, cutting the Cardinal's lead to 11-9.
Sean Gillies snuck a goal in with 3:40 to play on an assist from Tingle, cutting Fisher's lead down to 11-10.
Dave Malone put the game away with a man-up goal with 2:54 to play giving the Cardinals a 12-10 lead.
Adam Vlassis scored his second of the game with 1:14 to play making the score 12-11. The Tigers had a chance with nine seconds to play to tie the score, but never got a shot off as time ran out.
