The Game Story:
SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team made its 2002 home debut a successful one, defeating the Bulldogs of Wingate University 12-5 on Wednesday evening. The Maroons braved the cold and windy conditions to improve to 2-0 on the season, while Wingate fell to 1-1. The Maroons also improved to 2-0 all-time versus the Bulldogs.

Roanoke's Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) opened the game's scoring, beating the Bulldog keeper just over a minute into the contest. The Bulldogs would take a 2-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play, however. Ian Hill and Chris Jans put WU up 2-1 in the first, Jan's goal coming on the man-up. The Bulldogs would capitalize on two of their nine 'power play' opportunities in the contest.

Joe Weeren (Winchester, MA/Winchester) scored a man-up goal with 13:31 to play in the second and Colin Burke (Rancho Sante Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) scored with 8:43 to go to give the Maroons the lead for good. The Maroons would add two more goals, both coming from freshmen, Steve LoVecchio (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and Adam Saunders (Wayne, PA/Conestoga), in the period to take a 5-3 halftime lead.

The Maroons would put the game out of WU's reach in the third and early stages of the fourth, outscoring the Bulldogs 5-0 in 17 minutes of game time to take a 10-3 lead with 13:33 to play in the game. Bonasera scored two fourth period goals, within 35 seconds of each other and finished with three goals and two assists. Weeren scored twice and LoVecchio and Dan Reed (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) each had a goal and a helper.

The Maroons got a stellar effort from starting goalie Tim Morse (Sante Fe, NM/Tabor) who made 12 saves in the contest, including a one-on-one stop against Wingate's Matt DiMartino early in the second which would have given the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. After giving up 26 shots through the first two periods of play, the Maroon defense tightened up and let WU get off just 10 in the second half.
